General Information
Moorview Cottage is open all year around and you can always expect a warm welcome when you come and stay with us
Moorview is a granite built, converted barn, which nestles in a small peaceful hamlet on the western edge of Dartmoor.
Moorview is on the Sustrans “Route 27” Cycle path. The nearby Granite Way, Tarka Trail and Drakes Trail offer easy cycling along entirely traffic free former railways and paths (Cycle hire is available locally, please ask if you would like details)
Walk from the cottage onto lovely open moorland and / or riverside walks, there is no need to take the car
On the moors, wild ponies graze side by side with sheep and cattle; it is a walkers dream, it offers a sense of freedom. All kinds of animals, birds and plants can be found if you walk or sit quietly and watch. Dartmoor is a place where you can leave all your cares and worries behind you and just relax.
Although remote and tranquil, Moorview's location makes Devon and Cornwall, North, South, East or West accessible, the possibilities are limitless and some examples of what we mean are listed under Things to see and do but you don't have to travel far from Moorview to have a wonderful time, you can hire a cycle or fish or just take it easy and read a book, take a stroll to the local pub or a brisk walk over the top of Boulters Tor.
Why not sample a traditional "Devonshire cream tea" or enjoy good food at one of the local pubs and award winning restaurants. We have two local pubs in opposite directions, both serving good local ales and food, both of which have been on the television series "Taste of the West" in the past year and both are within walking distance of our cottage.
Our nearest town is Tavistock which is about five miles away. Tavistock is an attractive historic market town, which offers a variety of interesting shops and cafes and has a pannier market which is open most days throughout the year. In addition there is a farmers market which operates on alternate SaturdaysTrains, the local branch line from Gunnislake to Plymouth offers stunning views over the Tamar Valley
Sit back and relax and watch and enjoy the sun setting over the moors or watch the stars in the evening of a clear quite night
Why not watch the buzzards in the skies above, after dark watch out for the local barn owls and bats or just enjoy the wonders of the stars which light up the skies at night.
During the summer months, from dawn to dusk, you will be able to see an abundance of birds including Fly-Catchers, Treecreepers, Woodpeckers, Thrushes, Nuthatches, as well as the more familiar birds such as tits and finches
